On July 1st, 1,918 educators in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) were let go. On September 23rd, 832 classified workers for LAUSD will also be let go and 1,150 classified workers will be reassigned to a lower position in a second phase of cuts. These cuts are a result of LAUSD’s budget deficit for the upcoming year. There are two main factors contributing to the deficit: the loss of $200 million in federal stimulus funding that expired this year, and the projected loss of 20,000 students for the 2011-12 school year, which will cost the district an estimated $100 million in revenue.
AB 114, a one-year bill signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown this summer, requires school districts to maintain staffing levels in the 2011-12 school year equal to those in the previous year. Implementation of this bill has caused vigorous debate, and Steve has received numerous emails and calls concerning the re-hiring of teachers. Here is Steve’s response and thoughts on the issue:
