It has been a pleasure to visit the amazing gardens that exist in LAUSD schools. Unfortunately, too few students in LAUSD have the opportunity to participate and learn from this important learning tool. Students have shared stories with me about how school gardens have unlocked their interest and curiosity about the origins of food. Teachers have shared how the use of school gardens have peaked student interest in science and increased academic performance. I believe schools gardens are the key to developing the academic and holistic well-being of children. I am proud to be the Sponsor of the Resolution to Expand Sustainable Schoolyards and Environmental Initiatives and Curriculum, recently adopted by the Board on April 16, 2013.
